Green til it Hertz
posted in Fuel Economy, Alternative Fuels, Science & Technology, Automobiles |Hertz rent-a-car will soon have 10,000 hybrids and I very nearly rented one today. I need to do some major traveling this month and I deeply considered a hybrid to do it in. The one thing that killed it was that we have three adults and their luggage to haul on multi-hour highway trips, and none of the hybrids could comfortably do it. That’s not so much a fault with Hertz, but certainly a fault of the ‘green’ car industry. If you took a long box pickup and used 3′x3′x5′ at the front of the bed for batteries, you’d provide more oomph than most pickup drivers need….while leaving them with the same space as a short box pickup. Why is that so difficult? By the same token, a full sized hybrid or electric could fit 3 adults and luggage if they only made that design priority.
